Für ein Semesterprojekt an der ETH Lausanne (EPFL) hat der Student Alexandre Foucqueteau eine neue Anwendung für einen handgrossen EPFL-Roboter namens Cellulo entwickelt: Nun dient er als spielerische Orientierungshilfe für blinde und sehbehinderte Schulkinder, damit diese gefahrlos ihr Klassenzimmer mit all seinen Hindernissen kennenlernen können.

Die Kinder können Cellulo über eine zweidimensionale Karte des Raums bewegen, um darauf markierte Objekte wie Tische und Stühle ausfindig zu machen. Wenn der Roboter gegen ein Hindernis stösst, stoppt er, bewegt sich rückwärts und vibriert, wie die EPFL am Montag mitteilte. Das Kind muss dann das Objekt nennen, gegen das Cellulo gestossen ist. Wenn es die Orientierung verloren hat oder nicht weiss, worum es sich handelt, verrät die dazugehörige Software auf einem Tablet die Lösung.

Cellulo sei besonders robust, einfach zu handhaben und gehe kaum kaputt, schrieb die EPFL. Kinder könnten damit virtuell gegen jeden einzelnen Stuhl, Tisch und Schrank fahren, um deren Position zu erlernen. Lehrpersonen könnten den Roboter aber auch so programmieren, dass er einem vorbestimmten Pfad folgt. Foucqueteau verwirklichte das Projekt in Zusammenarbeit mit Agnieszka Kolodziej, Doktorandin der Universität Toulouse.

Jetzt wo das Grundprinzip steht, will der EPFL-Student das Ganze zu einer Schatzsuche weiterentwickeln: Dabei sollen Kinder gemeinsam einen virtuellen Schatz auf der Karte suchen, um den echten Schatz im Klassenzimmer zu finden. (sda)
