Auch das Steinpflaster, das Abwassersystem und die originalen Laternen werden überprüft. Dafür ist das berühmte Wahrzeichen Roms ab jetzt zwei Monate lang komplett gesperrt. Danach soll es teilweise wieder zugänglich sein.

Zuletzt wurde die Spanische Treppe vor 20 Jahren komplett restauriert. Das barocke Bauwerk aus dem 18. Jahrhundert ist ein Wahrzeichen Roms, das bei Touristen aus aller Welt als Treffpunkt und Fotomotiv beliebt ist.

“Wir geben der Stadt einen symbolischen Ort in Italien und in der Welt zurück“, sagte Roms Bürgermeister Ignazio Marino zum Start des Projekts am Mittwoch. An den Kosten der Sanierung beteiligt sich das italienische Unternehmen Bulgari mit 1,5 Millionen Euro. Italien bemüht sich zunehmend um Sponsoren, um seine Kulturdenkmäler zu erhalten. Privatunternehmen unterstützen auch die Restaurierung des Kolosseums und des Trevi-Brunnens. Dieser übrigens soll am 3. November eingeweiht werden.
