Ikea hatte im Sommer dieses Jahres nach dem Tod der Kleinkinder 36 Millionen Möbelstücke in den USA und Kanada zurückgerufen. In dem jetzt verhandelten Fall ging es nach Angaben der Anwälte um drei Kleinkinder im Alter von zwei Jahren. Die drei kamen ums Leben, als Sechs- beziehungsweise Drei-Schubladen-Kommoden umkippten und sie erdrückten oder erstickten.

In einer Mitteilung von Anfang November hatte Ikea von einem vierten Todesfall im Zusammenhang mit den Malm-Kommoden gesprochen, der sich schon 2011 ereignete. Der Möbelhersteller hatte darauf hingewiesen, dass die Kommoden gemäß Anleitung an der Wand befestigt werden müssen.

Ikea bot kostenlose Sets zur Verankerung der Möbel an. Kunden können sich aber auch den Preis erstatten lassen. Dies gilt für Stücke, die seit 2002 gekauft wurden. Ältere Möbel werden zum halben Preis zurückgenommen.
