Wissenschaftler haben Daten mit 1,125 Terabit pro Sekunde übertragen – 10 000-mal schneller als die deutschen DSL-Leitungen.

1,125 Terabit pro Sekunde ist der neue Weltrekord für die Übertragung digitaler Daten. Er gelang Forschern des University College London mit einer Glasfaser-Verbindung. In dieser Geschwindigkeit ließen sich alle Folgen der TV-Serie “Game of Thrones” in HD-Qualität innerhalb von einer Sekunde herunterladen, sagt Projektleiter Robert Maher.

Ein Terabit sind 1000 Gigabit oder eine Billion Bits. Bisher waren maximal etwa 100 Gigabit pro Sekunde erreicht worden. Die DSL-Leitungen des deutschen Festnetzes können maximal 100 Megabit pro Sekunde übertragen, das ist etwa ein Zehntausendstel des nun aufgestellten Rekords.

In den Glasfaserleitungen selbst lassen sich noch deutlich größere Übertragungsgeschwindigkeiten erzielen, etwa 10 Terabit pro Sekunde. Dabei kann allerdings die Sender-Empfänger-Einheit, der Tranceiver, nicht mithalten. Die Forscher haben daher unter anderem den Anteil des Rauschens reduziert – so dass unter den übertragenen Daten mehr brauchbare Information ist.
